In Part One of this series, we talked about the edit.

The origin story that gets trimmed before it goes public. The structural advantages that disappear from the founding narrative. The choice — made early, often unconsciously — to lead with the version of the story that sells rather than the version that's complete.

That choice looks small at the beginning. A little PR polish. A more compelling pitch. A narrative shaped for the room it needs to land in.

But that choice is never just a marketing decision. It is a governance decision. It answers a foundational question that every organization eventually has to face: when truth and perception conflict, which one wins?

For the founders we discussed in Part One, the answer was established before the company existed. Perception wins.

What happens next is what this essay is about.

Because the edit doesn't stay in the bio. It travels. It gets inherited by every layer of the organization. It becomes the unspoken operating logic that shapes how problems get reported, how safety concerns get handled, how bad news travels — or doesn't — from the bottom of the organization to the top.

And when that logic meets an institution responsible for human lives, the result is not a PR crisis.

It is a body count.


Boeing: When the Acquired Culture Wins

Boeing was not always this company.

For most of its history, Boeing was defined by one thing above everything else: engineering excellence. The people who ran it were engineers who understood aircraft intimately. The culture was built around a simple premise — the plane has to work, and the people building it have to know everything about how it works.

That culture produced some of the most significant aircraft ever built. It also produced a level of institutional integrity that made Boeing one of the most trusted names in aviation.

Then, in 1997, Boeing acquired McDonnell Douglas.

On paper, Boeing was the acquiring company. In practice, something far more consequential happened. Despite Boeing being the acquirer, former McDonnell Douglas executive Harry Stonecipher eventually became Boeing's CEO and immediately set out to change Boeing's culture — proclaiming openly that the intent was for Boeing to be "run like a business rather than a great engineering firm."

Read that again. The CEO of one of the world's most safety-critical engineering companies announced, as policy, that engineering would no longer be the primary value.

Where previous generations of Boeing leaders prided themselves on knowing everything about the aircraft they built, the new leaders were judged by their performance in meeting financial metrics. The separation between senior executives and the people actually building the planes was not accidental. In 2001, Boeing moved its headquarters from Seattle to Chicago — separating corporate leadership from its engineering operations — to gain $60 million in state and local tax credits over 20 years.

Sixty million dollars. In exchange for physically removing the people making decisions from the people building the planes.

What followed over the next two decades was the systematic replacement of a truth-telling culture with a perception-managing one. Engineering concerns that once traveled freely upward now had to pass through layers of financial and reputational filtering before they reached anyone with authority to act. Congressional investigations later described a culture of concealment and undue pressure placed on employees.

The 737 MAX was the result.

The rushed development of the 737 MAX resulted in the implementation of a software system — MCAS — that was dependent on a single sensor. When that sensor malfunctioned, it triggered automatic nose-down movements that pilots had not been adequately informed about or trained to override. Boeing had categorized the MAX as a derivative of an existing aircraft to avoid more stringent certification requirements. The FAA, whose oversight relationship with Boeing had grown dangerously close over decades, did not push back hard enough.

Two planes fell out of the sky. 346 people died.

And then — consistent with everything that had come before — Boeing's first instinct was not transparency. When the first crash occurred, Boeing's CEO told the board the plane was safe, actively contradicting what internal engineers already knew.

The edit, again. Even after the bodies.

Chernobyl: The State as Perception Machine

On April 26, 1986, Reactor Number Four at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant exploded.

What happened in the hours, days, and weeks that followed is one of the most documented governance failures in human history. And it was not primarily a story about operator error, though operators made mistakes. It was a story about what happens when an entire civilization has been running on managed perception for so long that it cannot respond to truth even when truth arrives at catastrophic scale.

The Soviet state's relationship with reality was not accidental. It was structural. The entire apparatus — political, military, scientific, media — was organized around controlling what people believed rather than accurately reporting what was true. That was not a bug. It was the operating system.

The RBMK reactor had known design flaws. Soviet engineers had identified them. That information was managed, classified, buried — because acknowledging a flaw in Soviet nuclear technology would have meant acknowledging a flaw in Soviet power. And Soviet power, as one character in the Chernobyl dramatization articulates with precision, existed primarily as perception. The power was real only as long as the perception held.

So when the reactor exploded, the instinct that activated was not truth-telling. It was the same instinct that had governed every other crisis — manage what gets out. Minimize. Deny. Send workers in without telling them what they were walking into. Give allied nations the propaganda numbers for radiation levels rather than the actual ones.

People died not just from radiation. They died from being lied to about what they were being exposed to.

And then — five years and eight months later — the Soviet Union ceased to exist. Mikhail Gorbachev himself said that Chernobyl contributed more to the collapse of the Soviet Union than his entire program of political reform. A civilization built on managed perception was undone, faster than anyone predicted, when the gap between the story and the reality finally became too large to maintain.


The Pattern Is the Point

Boeing and Chernobyl are separated by an ocean, a decade, and entirely different political systems. One is a corporation. One is a government. One failed because an acquired culture slowly colonized an institution's values. One failed because a state's founding logic made honest governance structurally impossible.

But the mechanism is identical.

In both cases, there was a moment — probably many moments — when someone inside the system knew something was wrong and the system's response was to manage that knowledge rather than act on it. To filter it. To protect the institution's perception of itself rather than fix the actual problem.

In both cases, the people who paid the price were the ones closest to the work. The operators at Chernobyl who were not told what they were walking into. The pilots of Lion Air and Ethiopian Airlines who were not told what the MCAS system would do. The passengers who had no idea that the plane they were boarding had been rushed through certification to protect a financial timeline.

The people at the top — the executives, the party officials, the regulators — were insulated from the consequences by the same layers of perception management that created the problem in the first place.

This is not coincidence. This is architecture.


What the Edit Costs at Scale

In Part One we talked about what founders lose when they edit their origin stories. They lose their relationship with truth. And that loss gets built into everything they create.

Boeing's story adds a dimension to that argument that is worth sitting with. Boeing didn't start with a dishonest founder. It started with genuine engineering integrity. What destroyed it was the introduction of a culture — through acquisition, through leadership change, through the slow institutional decision to prioritize perception over substance — that had never had that integrity to begin with.

Which means this is not only a founder problem. It is a governance problem. The culture of managed perception is contagious. It spreads. It can enter a healthy institution through a merger, through a new CEO, through a board that has stopped asking hard questions — and once it takes hold, it rewrites the institution's relationship with truth from the inside.

The edit, once normalized, becomes invisible. People stop noticing the gap between what's being said and what's actually true. It becomes the water they swim in.

And then one day the reactor explodes. Or the plane falls out of the sky.

By that point, the institution is genuinely confused about what went wrong. Because from inside a perception-managed system, nothing looked wrong. The metrics were fine. The certifications were in order. The quarterly reports looked good.

That is the most dangerous thing about governance built on managed perception. It doesn't feel like a crisis from the inside. It feels like normal operations — right up until it doesn't.

The Question Every Organization Has to Answer

The through line from Part One to here is this: the edit is never just a story. It is a decision about what the organization will do when truth becomes inconvenient.

Founders who edit their origin stories have already answered that question before the company exists. Institutions that acquire a perception-managing culture and fail to actively fight it answer it slowly, over years, until the answer is so embedded that no one can see it anymore.

In both cases, the cost of that answer is eventually paid by the people with the least power to change it.

Boeing's engineers raised concerns. They were pressured into silence. The workers who would have blown the whistle at Chernobyl had no mechanism to do so safely. The pilots who flew the 737 MAX had no idea what they didn't know.

If your organization is one where uncomfortable truth does not travel upward — where problems get filtered before they reach the people with authority to fix them — you are not running a business. You are running a deferred crisis.

The question is not whether the gap between perception and reality will become visible. It always does.

The question is what it will cost when it does.

They are symptoms of something older and deeper — a civilizational operating system built on the same logic of managed perception. How did we get here? Meet Alexis Frank

There are three things in life I’ve never enjoyed being: tired, uncomfortable in my clothes, and unable to afford the things I want.

Three things in life I had been for awhile: tired, uncomfortable in my clothes, and unable to afford the things I want (first world problems, am I right?)

Those things served a purpose in my life, but no longer suited who I believe to be, the best version of myself. 

Let me give you some background

My brother and I were raised by a single mother, in NYC, who dedicated her life to teaching special education students. It goes without saying that we never had a lot of money. We never questioned where our next meal was coming from and we got to travel to beautiful places (on a tight budget of course), but we knew the reality of our finances at a very young age.

So in order to save my mother the ungodly burden of co-signing on loans for college, I joined the Army at 17, which for 6 years, made me both tired and uncomfortable in my clothes (those boots were not the business). But it was at this point, I experienced having money, and I knew I liked that. But the rest had to go.

I met my husband before I got out of the military, and we had our son. I worked for a few small businesses, spent some time as a SAHM, which I loathed (don’t judge, it ain’t for everyone), and finished up a few degrees. This left me both tired and unable to afford the things I wanted (which was just a nice vacation without a screaming baby for two nights). So again, I knew something had to change.

Fast forward to when we got the opportunity to change duty stations. I was finishing up my MBA and I was able to finally land a position in corporate America, which I thought I had always wanted (Alexa: play “living the American dream). I tried my best to make the most of it and to be grateful for the opportunity, but my commute was horrible, my pantsuits were tight (I was pregnant with our third child), my heels hurt, and most of my meetings could have been emails. 

Then the pandemic hit, and I got to work from home. As horrible as it was, I finally thought to myself “this is how I do it. I get to work from home in my pajamas, make money, spend more time with my kids, and take naps.” But I was wrong again.

When my husband changed duty stations again, I was placed on a high profile program with my company that demanded mandatory overtime. I knew then that corporate life was never going to give me the time freedom I needed, and that starting my business was the only way I could build the life I wanted which included leggings and vacations.

The Filing Cabinet was born out of my realization that I had been coaching people ever since my teenage years. My friends and colleagues have always seen me as the go-to expert for pretty much any issues they have ever had.
